Incomplete circle, Vesch, Vienna

Opening Thu Sept. 12th, 7pm
Vesch is open on Tuesdays and Thurdays, 7pm to midnight
and by appointment 0676-6748796
Schikanedergasse 11, 1040 Wien

Matthias Kaiser’s “Incomplete Circle” is the first presentation in the exhibition space Ve.Sch of a position on the applied arts.  With its distinctive bar and its subtly characteristic lighting, the precise simplicity of the environment of Ve.Sch provides a particularly rich ground for a discussion of the aesthetics of functionality.  Matthias Kaiser’s ceramics are distinguished in the same economy of value: there is meaning to be found in the details. The installation occupying the large gallery consists of plates, bowls, cups and other such articles of familiar, daily use.  The out-sized pedestal upon which these are presented has the effect of channeling our attention away from their functionality, however, and onto their formal properties.  Kaiser’s formal language oscillates between traditions of Japanese craft and European Modernism (for example Bauhaus).  In harmony with the Japanese aesthetic, and in marked contrast to the processes of modern industrial production, those properties of the material that manifest themselves in the process of their manipulation, through irregularities and chance distortions, are accepted as integral to the finished product.  These traces tell their own story, a story of the stylistic resolutions of chemical reactions, of chance, and sometimes even of mistakes. The objects generate associations with the principles of Japanese aesthetic philosophy: balance in asymmetry (like an incomplete circle), understatement, subtlety, and the rejection of conventional perfection, among others.  In the smallest of details, these aspects of the work manifest a Freudian sense of the uncanny, whereby a thing appears at once familiar and ultimately unknowable. Perhaps it is this sense of uncanniness which perpetuates the tension between use and uselessness, closeness and distance, that not least of all emerges from the way in which the work reflects upon the nature of its medium itself.

Handle with care, Die Ausstellungsstrasse, Vienna

Gruppenausstellung
kuratiert von Isabella Ritter und Katharina Husslein
Ausstellungsstrasse 53, 1020 Wien
Eröffnung Fr 25. Mai, 19h

The group exhibition "Handle with care" deals with
the fragility of art and design objects.
The idea is to link objects coming from the arts to those of design
through the fragile aspect they have in common.
The fragility refers less to the materiality of the objects than to the
anticipated moment when the fragility reveals its potential to the
viewer, be it through time or through aesthetics.
On another level the exhibition explores the merging of usable
art objects and design objects since there is a high correlation in
the visual strategies both employ. There will be usable objects
such as furniture or lamps, which will be replenished by
non-usable, fragile artworks, such as video-installations and drawings.
